Bartolomeo Platina (1421-1481) dedicated the Lives or the Popes (Vat. lat. 2044) to Sixtus IV (1471-1484) in an effort to shore up the foundations of the papacy. Named Vatican Librarian on 15 June 1475, Platina was a prominent member of the papal court, and a likely confidant of Sixtus IV. He occupied a position at the center of cultural production during the Sistine papacy, beginning with the presentation of the Lives and concluding with the decoration of the Vatican Library, underway at his death. Both projects converge in Melozzo da Forlì's fresco of Sixtus IV and Platina, suggesting that Platina was also a catalyst for the works for the Jubilee described in the inscription.
