The art of memory - ars memorativa - profoundly impacted Western culture throughout the Middle Ages and Renaissance. Ever since Aby Warburg inscribed the word Mnemosyne over the door of the institute that bears his name, modero scholarship has increasingly recognized and explored the central role of memorization, with all its various techniques and applications, in the practice of writers.
This volume presents the papers of a conference held at Villa I Tatti on May 11, 2006, conceived and organized by Anna Maria Busse Berger and Massimiliano Rossi. Ranging from literature and music to painting and architecture, the eight essays collected here pose new questions about the relationship between memory as a tool for creative expression and its formative impact on patterns of thought and modes of organizing knowledge.
