Against the background of East-West impasse, a great modern philosopher presents an arresting view and an encouraging forecast in this new popular book. There is lively, historical analysis here; there is graceful philosophical learning, and there, is astute political and cultural comment on the present scene.
Dr. Radhakrishnan's orientation is topical (how to resolve some colossal misunderstandings before they erupt in suicidal war), but his treatment is centuries deep in time and wide as the scope of human thought and achievement. He begins with India's 4000year-old civilization, and contrasts it, together with other Eastern cultures, at the major points in history where the commerce, science and philosophies of the Mediterranean and European worlds interpenetrated and influenced each other.
The religions and thought-systems in particular of two hemispheres are illuminated. In a fascinating chapter on the development of the Judeo-Christian civilization, its indebtedness to and remarkable correspondence to Eastern religions are pointed up. At the same time, Dr. Radhakrishnan displays a keen perception and warm appreciation of Christianity. His book closes with a moving appeal to all communities to act on their heritage of common belief while there is yet time.
Sarvepalli Radhakrishnan is one of the few universal scholars honored by East and West alike, having had a long career at Oxford and Benares Hindu University. He is author of many books in fields related to that of philosophy, the most recent being RECOVERY OF FAITH. He is at present vice-president of India and at one time was their ambassador to Russia.
