This volume contains the proceedings of an interdisciplinary workshop held at "Sapienza" University of Rome on May 13th 2016. The research aimed at examining the role played by the Tibetan and Japanese cultures in the dialectical and diachronic evolution of Buddhist doctrines, with particular reference to the tantric ones. Nowadays, Buddhism continues to reveal its ethical and biospiritual impact not only throughout Asia, but also in the Western countries where it is increasingly pursued; it is interesting to note that for what concerns European nations, Buddhism has already been recognized as an official religion by three of them (Austria, Italy, Russia). In Italy, it has become the third major religion, an occurrence not only due to the flux of Asian immigrants but also to the conversion of nationals; the sociological implications of such an occurrence should not be disesteemed as far as cultural intermediation is concerned. Within the vast landscape of Central and East Asian tantric literature, the contribution of Tibet and Japan is rich and composite; it is the object of ongoing studies by corresponding scholarship; however, an explicitly comparative research has never been carried out so far. The proposed research project was devised as a preliminary groundbreaking attempt to fill this gap, with the hope that it may fuel and enliven future research activities in relevant areas, especially at the national level where they appear decidedly scant.
