Carrello
This new edition of The Poetical Works of John Milton, including the Latin, Italian, and Greek poems, follows Helen Darbishire's Oxford English Text edition (Clarendon Press, 1952, 1955). It is based on the editions printed under Milton's supervision and contemporary manuscripts have been consulted where tbey survive. Milton was a careful craftsman as well as a fine artist in poetry, and to him every sound and syllable mattered, every pause or silence between sounds. There is good evidence that he adopted principles of spelling and punctuation to indicate clearly the way in which he wished his lines to be read, and the aim of this edition has been to produce a text as near as possible to what he himself intended. Also included are prose translations of all the foreign poems, from the Columbia University Press edition of Milton.
