For centuries the West tended to regard Persia as a land of legend and romance, the land of Omar Khayyam. Only in more recent times have the researches of archaeologists and other scholars, together with progress in communications, made the country and its people, and its extremely eventful history, much better known.
Compared with the nations of western Europe, Persia is a large country, being nearly three times the size of France. But although she covers so extensive an area, her population is rather less than half that of France. Persia is bounded on the west by Iraq and Turkey, on the north by the Soviet Union and the Caspian Sea, on the east by Afghanistan and West Pakistan, on the south and south-west by the Indian Ocean and the Persian Gulf.
