From the Foreword of volume II, 2:
We have thought it suitable to have the volumes of plates (Volume II, 2-3) come first, in order to allow scholars to examine without further delay the material collected in the course of our archaeological campaigns at Butkara I.
We trust that within this year Volume I, containing the reports of the first campaigns, and Volume II, I, offering a classification and a study of the finds, will be brought out.
The objects published in this volume of plates (11,2-3) are the results of the excavations carried out in the seasons 1956 to 1958; but it has proved necessary to include therein a group of reliefs belonging to the collection of H. H. the Wali of Swat, and a few pieces brought to light outside the excavation sites, or discovered on the site after the signing of the agreements with the Turin institutions in 1959; following the said agreements the "Centro scavi e ricerche archeologiche in Asia", already established at IsMEO, has been termed "Centro scavi e ricerche archeologiche in Asia dell'IsMEO e di Torino".
We have been prompted to include these pieces by the need of ensuring at once a complete and comprehensive survey of the finds, for the study of their stylistic sequence, and proper histoncal perspective.
From the Foreword of volume II, 3:
The present Volume contains the Plates illustrating a further set Gandhāra pieces found by the Italian Archaeological Mission of IsMEO in Swat in the excavations at Butkara I and Saidu Sharīf I, or purchased for the local Museum, or extant in some private collections, chiefly in that of Major General Miangul Jahanzeb, Ruler of Swat.
As in the preceding Volume of Plates (Vol. II, 2) there are comprised also a few pieces which have been found at the time when the agreement between IsMEO and Turin was in force. The Gandhāra pieces discovered during that period have been marked by an asterisk, in the Index of Inventory Numbers, pp. 198 ff.
The successive Volume of Plates, which is expected to be published soon, will illustrate a relevant number of finds come to light when the above-mentioned agreement was in force, i.e. from 1959 to 1961, and in the subsequent period. This last Volume will therefore appear under the heading of Centro Studi e Scavi Archeologici dell'IsMEO e di Torino in Asia.
In addition, the following Volumes are in preparation: one Volume, containing the Report on the excavations in the Sacred Area of Butkara I, and the Volume containing the text related to the sculptures belonging to the same area (Vol. II, I), both of them by Dr. Domenico Faccenna; to these is to be added a Volume on the work at Ghazni, by Dr. Umberto Scerrato. (Giuseppe Tucci).
