From the flirtation of the sixties with transcendental meditation to television's exploration of the spiritual evolution and physical development under Zen in the seventies, there has been a growing awareness of the more exotic side of Eastern culture. This fascination in the West has been centred increasingly on the religious, philosophical and spiritual aspects of these cultures.

General Uban in this book presents the reader with a very personal account of his experiences with some of the most respected Gurus of India. He has devoted a lifetime to acquiring a broad knowledge of the spiritual, mystical and contemplative disciplines found in the subcontinent. Throughout a distinguished career in the Indian Army, General Uban was able to spend a great deal of time with his country's religious leaders. He formed a personal and intimate insight not only of the disciplines and theories involved but more especially of the men and women responsible for their teaching and propagation. Now retired from the Army, the author is a committed advocate of World Peace and Brotherhood, as proposed by many of the Gurus and holy men mentioned in the book. General Uban's firm dedication to his religious beliefs is paralleled by an openminded recognition of the validity of all religious sentiments as being necessary for greater Peace and Universal Love. His liberal approach has not made him blind to the numerous frauds whose sole aim is personal gain. He frequently reminds the reader of the need to choose one's religious leader carefully, for the path of spiritual enlightenment is never easy. General Uban presents a book, based on his valuable experiences and insights of these men and women of God, that is essential reading for anyone intent on the study or practice of spiritual and contemplative disciplines.

From an early age, there were considerable religious influences on Sujan Singh Uban. Born into a devout Sikh family, he lived in a predominantly Moslem area, and later attended a Christian school, the Gordon College, Rawalpindi. After qualifying as a surgeon, he volunteered for a combat commission in the Indian Artillery and in the course of his military career, was awarded two of India's highest decorations for bravery. His postings to different areas of India gave General Uban numerous contacts with contemporary religious figures. He spent his spare time making a comparative study of different religions, which resulted in this book, containing a fascinating account of his personal experiences. Since his retirement, General Uban has devoted himself to promoting universal brotherhood and love of God. The royalties of this boot will be dedicated to this cause.
