Raphael's Astronomical Ephemeris of the Planet's Places for 2012
The ephemeris gives the apparent geocentric positions of the Sun, Moon, and planets (i.e. the positions are as seen from the centre of the Earth). The longitudes, given daily, may be interpolated to any particular instant of time using the daily motions given on pages 26-28. The accuracy of the longitudes thus obtained is 1 arcsecond for the Sun, 1 arcminute for Venus and Mars, 2 arcminutes for Mercuzy, and 4 arcminutes for the Moon. The accuracy for the Moon can be improved to 1 arcminute if the values for 24h. are used in conjunction with those for 12h., and the differences taken by hand. The latitudes and declinations of the Moon can be interpolated to an aeeuracy of several minutes of arc.
To assist in interpolation of the latitudes and declinations of the planets, values of these quantities are always given up to the 31st of each month (even though the month may actually have < 31 days) in order to avoid the necessity of turning the page, and, in the case of latitude, it ensures that the tabular interval is always two days.
If topocentric positions (positions as seen by an observer at any specified point on the Earth's surfaee) are required, these have to be ca1culated separately but users should note that the maximum differences between geocentrie and topoeentrie positions are as follows: Sun - 9 arcseconds Moon - 61.5 arcminutes Planets - 1 arcminute.
