More than forty years ago, when Lama Govinda was travelling in Tibet, he began personal notebooks of his observations on the I Ching, as he found it in the Tibetan tradition. His interest in the I Ching continued, and he brought to this first-hand study of the Oriental systems, his own heritage of Western scholarship. But above all, he sought to understand the trigrams and hexagrams directly, that is, without depending on the voluminous commentaries.
